Meet the Team We are a specialized team within the Common Hardware Group, focusing on EMC design. Our team collaborates closely with cross-functional groups such as hardware mechanical and power engineering to ensure Cisco products comply with global EMC standards.
We prioritize practical engineering solutions, foster strong collaboration, and embrace continuous learning in a dynamic, high-impact environment. Our ultimate mission is to embed EMC robustness into product designs from the very beginning, enabling Cisco to deliver reliable, high-quality products to market with efficiency and confidence.
By proactively integrating EMC considerations early in the development cycle, we help safeguard product performance and compliance, supporting Cisco’s commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction. Your Impact As an EMC Design Engineer, you will partner closely with hardware development teams to ensure products achieve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance while meeting performance, cost, and schedule objectives.
You will influence product designs from architecture through production by providing EMC expertise, conducting design reviews, leading troubleshooting activities, and supporting worldwide regulatory compliance. Responsibilities Collaborate with hardware design teams throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure EMC compliance is incorporated early in the design process.
Work cross-functionally with Hardware, Mechanical, Signal Integrity, Power Integrity, PCB Layout, Thermal, Manufacturing, and Regulatory teams during design, verification, and product qualification. Review schematics, PCB layouts, mechanical designs, routing, shielding, grounding, and system architectures to identify EMC risks and recommend design improvements.
Work with EMC test team to perform pre-compliance and compliance EMC testing, analyze test results, diagnose EMI issues, and develop practical, cost-effective mitigation solutions. Lead EMC debugging activities using laboratory instrumentation including spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, near-field probes, LISNs, network analyzers, current probes, and other diagnostic tools.
Balance EMC performance with product cost, manufacturability, reliability, signal integrity, and power integrity considerations. Support worldwide regulatory certifications by working with internal teams and external test laboratories. Develop EMC design guidelines, best practices, and documentation to improve first-pass compliance success across product lines.
Manage multiple projects simultaneously while delivering high-quality technical results within aggressive development schedules. Required Qualifications Strong understanding of electromagnetics, RF theory, antenna theory, transmission lines, and analog/digital circuit fundamentals.
Solid knowledge of Signal Integrity (SI), Power Integrity (PI), and high-speed digital design principles. Hands-on experience reviewing schematics, PCB layouts, and mechanical designs for EMC compliance. Experience with root cause analysis, and troubleshooting complex electromagnetic interference issues.
Proficiency with EMC laboratory equipment including spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, LISNs, network analyzers, near-field probes, current probes, and related instrumentation. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to cross-functional engineering teams.
Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple concurrent projects, and drive issues to resolution. Preferred Qualifications Experience with high-speed networking, switching, routing, server, storage, or telecommunications products. Experience performing EMI/EMC testing.
Familiarity with simulation tools for EMC, SI, or PI analysis. Experience with shielding, grounding, cable design, and enclosure optimization techniques. Knowledge of PCB stack-up design, return current management, and power distribution network design.
Experience supporting manufacturing and resolving EMC issues during product qualification or production. Experience working with external certification laboratories and regulatory agencies. Experience with 400G/800G Ethernet , SerDes, PCIe, DDR, USB, or other high-speed interfaces.
Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field. 3+ years of hands-on experience in EMC design, testing, and troubleshooting for electronic products. Working knowledge of international EMC regulatory standards and product certification requirements, including FCC, CISPR 22/32, ICES, VCCI, EN 55032, EN 55035, IEC 61000-4-x immunity standards, and CE marking requirements.
