What You’ll Do
- The Data Center Design team is the technical engineering team responsible for the architectural and infrastructure design standards across CoreWeave's global portfolio, ensuring facilities are highly scalable, efficient
- optimized to support next-generation, high-density compute workloads.
- The team drives the entire design lifecycle from early-stage site feasibility through final technology fit-out, establishing the foundation for seamless construction and long-term operational success.
- Through continuous technical innovation and standardization, they enable CoreWeave to rapidly and reliably scale its physical footprint to meet global infrastructure demands
About The Role
The Medium Voltage Substation/Distribution Design Engineer leads the electrical design and engineering of medium voltage substations (15kV - 230kV) across CoreWeave's data center campus portfolio. On a day-to-day basis, you will own power infrastructure projects from early concept through construction support, executing substation layouts, equipment selection, single-line diagrams, and protection/control schemes.
You will act as a hands-on technical expert, developing core design concepts, reviewing power systems analysis studies (short-circuit, load flow, arc flash), and directing external engineering consultants to produce high-quality deliverables.
Additionally, you will integrate advanced on-site generation systems—including BESS, turbines, and automatic transfer schemes—while mentoring junior engineers to ensure all distribution solutions are safe, code-compliant, and optimized for high-density power demands.
This role requires up to 30% travel
In This Role, You Will
- Manage power infrastructure projects from early concept through construction support, executing substation layouts, equipment selection, single-line diagrams, and protection/control schemes.
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve medium voltage engineering standards, design guidelines, and best practices to enable rapid infrastructure scaling.
- Review and provide technical oversight of design drawings, specifications, calculations, and power systems analysis studies (short-circuit, load flow, arc flash) from external consultants.
- Partner with third-party engineering firms, utility providers, and equipment manufacturers to ensure strict compliance with Basis of Design (BoD) requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and engineering excellence.
- Support project planning activities, including early-stage site feasibility, capacity planning, budgeting, and risk management.
- Who You Are:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience: 7+ years of experience specifically focused on medium voltage substation and distribution design.
- Technical Deliverables: Direct experience producing substation design deliverables, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, protection schematics, equipment layouts, grounding plans, and cable schedules.
- Equipment & Systems: Experience specifying medium voltage equipment (transformers, switchgear, switchboards, capacitor banks) and designing protection and control systems, including relay coordination and settings.
- Generation Integration: Experience designing and integrating on-site generation systems, including generators, turbines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), automatic transfer schemes, paralleling switchgear
- inverter/converter interfacing.
- Software Proficiency: Hands-on proficiency with power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, or equivalent) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent).
- Thorough working knowledge of IEEE standards (C2, 80, 242, 399, 519, 1584) and NEC/NFPA requirements (including NFPA 70E, NESC, ANSI, and IEC guidelines).
- Preferred
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure.
- Experience managing utility interconnection requirements and utility coordination.
- Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, substation automation systems, and communication protocols (such as IEC 61850).
- Direct exposure to high voltage (69kV+) substation design.
- Experience supporting energy procurement and construction (EPC) or design-build projects within data center, industrial, or oil & gas power distribution environments.
- Experience with specialized on-site generation technologies, including gas turbine plants (simple/combined cycle), fuel cell systems (SOFC, PEMFC), cogeneration (CHP), islanding/anti-islanding protection, black start capability
- compliance with IEEE 1547 and NFPA 110.
