Job Summary ConocoPhillips is seeking a highly motivated Natural Gas Storage Trader to join its North America Gas and Power business. This position is responsible for managing and optimizing a portfolio of natural gas storage assets across the Lower 48 United States.
The successful candidate will combine commercial acumen, market expertise, and disciplined risk management to maximize the value of storage assets while supporting broader trading and marketing objectives. This role requires deep knowledge of North American natural gas markets, storage and transportation infrastructure, and physical and financial trading strategies.
The individual will work closely with commercial, risk, compliance, legal, and operations teams to identify opportunities, execute transactions, and ensure adherence to governance and regulatory requirements. Position Overview Your responsibilities may include: Trading and Risk Management Manage and optimize forward basis and time-spread positions associated with the storage asset portfolio.
Develop and execute trading strategies to achieve profit and loss targets while maintaining compliance with applicable risk limits. Monitor market fundamentals, supply and demand trends, storage inventories, transportation constraints, and regional pricing dynamics.
Evaluate market opportunities and execute transactions that generate risk-adjusted returns. Apply disciplined risk management practices to ensure compliance with delegated trading authorities and risk policies. Storage Asset Optimization Maximize value from storage assets through physical and financial optimization strategies.
Identify and capture market opportunities in forward and prompt markets. Provide commercial input regarding storage acquisition requirements and optimization opportunities across regional trading teams. Partner with physical trading teams to enhance portfolio performance and operational flexibility.
Stakeholder Engagement Build and maintain productive relationships with customers, counterparties, and market participants. Collaborate with Physical Traders, Risk Management, Compliance, Legal, Settlements, and Operations teams to achieve business objectives.
Support franchise growth through customer engagement, market intelligence, and commercial opportunity development. Governance and Compliance Ensure trading activities comply with internal policies, delegated authorities, and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate trade capture, documentation, and transaction records. Partner with Risk, Compliance, and Audit teams to support governance processes and controls. Conduct business activities in a manner consistent with ConocoPhillips' values and ethical standards.
Leadership and Collaboration Foster a collaborative, high-performing trading environment. Mentor and support the development of junior traders and commercial professionals. Demonstrate a team-first mindset and provide support during critical business periods, including bid week activities.
Prepare and deliver high-quality internal reports, market summaries, and commercial presentations. Basic/Required Qualifications Legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Bachelor's degree or higher in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or a related discipline. 10+ years of experience in natural gas trading, storage optimization, basis trading, time-spread trading, or closely related commercial activities.
Working knowledge of North American natural gas markets, infrastructure, and commercial practices. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Ability to support commercial operations during bid week, weekends, holidays, and outside normal business hours as needed.
Preferred Qualifications Extensive experience optimizing natural gas storage assets in physical and financial markets. Deep understanding of North American natural gas fundamentals, storage economics, and regional market dynamics. Demonstrated success delivering commercial results and achieving profit and loss objectives.
Strong understanding of risk management principles, market risk frameworks, and compliance requirements. Knowledge of natural gas contracts, FERC regulations, and relevant industry practices. Proven ability to make sound commercial decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic trading environment.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Excellent communication and relationship-building capabilities with internal and external stakeholders. Experience mentoring, coaching, and developing less experienced traders.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organizational boundaries and influence results through partnerships. Recognized credibility and professionalism within the natural gas industry.
