Manager, Cell-Based High Throughput Screening and Mechanistic Pharmacology in Spring House, PA. Purpose: The Discovery Technologies and Molecular Pharmacology (DTMP) team is a critical part of the Discovery Sciences organization in Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicines and is committed to the delivery of high-quality chemical leads needed for the generation of small molecule clinical compounds across Therapeutic Area discovery teams.

As a member of the DTMP team, the Sr Manager will interact with diverse scientific disciplines including biochemistry, cellular pharmacology, hit identification, and protein science. Within DTMP, the Mechanistic and Cell Pharmacology department is responsible for the delivery of high-quality small molecule lead compounds by applying rapid, innovative, and therapeutically relevant cellular assays from target concept through the lead optimization process.

We are seeking a highly motivated, experienced, and innovative scientific leader to drive the implementation of High Throughput (HT) cell-based assays. The ideal candidate will have strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to connect with our partners to deliver on goals and objectives, foster an environment of collaboration, collegiality, and positive communication.

This position includes management responsibility. You will be responsible for: Lead a team of scientists to implement recombinant, primary, and/or complex cell-based assays with a variety of endpoints to enable de novo lead identification from large scale screening campaigns.

Conceive of and implement hit finding plans in collaboration with therapeutic area stakeholders and multidiscipline DTMP teams. Build understanding of on target mechanism of action and signaling, deploying diversity of cell-based pharmacological approaches designed to differentiate lead molecules, establish in vitro/in vivo correlations, and identify drivers of PK/PD relationships.

Oversee, execute, and troubleshoot weekly assays in support of medicinal chemistry efforts, assuring high-quality data analysis and reporting. Exhibit an awareness of new technology advances and scientific knowledge in cellular bioassay methods to apply them to assays in the laboratory.

Contribute data and methods to compelling scientific presentations and reports for internal review meetings and scientific journals. Qualifications/Requirements: Education: Minimum of a M.S. Degree in Cell Biology and/or Physiology, Immunology, Oncology, Neuroscience, or relevant field with an additional 8-10 years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry experience is required.

PhD with 5-8 years of experience is preferred. Skills/Experience: Knowledge of lab automation is required. Proven experience leading multi-disciplinary teams supporting cell-based pharmacology lead identification and lead optimization functions.

Possess strong working knowledge of basic molecular pharmacology including modes of target inhibition and activation. Broad target class expertise in the establishment of robust miniaturized cell-based assays in automated plate-based formats including readouts such as fluorescence, chemiluminescence, and TR-FRET.

Demonstrated ability to construct hit finding and hit progression strategies. Demonstrated ability to analyze, visualize, and interpret large (>1MM) data sets to enable hit triage. Demonstrated excellence in both written and oral communication is required.
