Basic Function The Development Engineer II is a hands-on, multi-disciplinary engineering role within the Brooks Instrument New Product Development team. The position requires demonstrated competence across mechanical, electrical, and software systems, with direct experience designing, building, and validating integrated electromechanical systems.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of contributing across the full product development lifecycle — from requirements definition through prototype, test, and production release — and will be capable of operating both independently and as part of a team in complex, ambiguous problem spaces.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Design, build, and validate mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic assemblies and test systems for new and existing products. In order to execute this job, you will need to be able to: Develop Python-based automated test scripts and data analysis tools to support firmware validation and system-level performance characterization.
Review and interpret circuit schematics to support hardware/software co-design; propose circuit optimizations to facilitate firmware development. Analyze mechanical components and fluid dynamic systems; develop and refine flow measurement and control algorithms using theoretical and empirical methods.
Collaborate cross-functionally with Electrical, Firmware, Test, and Manufacturing Engineering to optimize designs for performance and manufacturability. Support system integration activities, including debugging and performance validation of hardware/software interactions.
Define and execute test plans for design verification and validation; document results in clear technical reports. Contribute to system requirements, product specifications, DFMEA, and PFMEA activities. Partner with automation, manufacturing engineering, and operations to develop assembly processes and functional requirements for manufacturing test stands.
Education and Experience B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline. 8–10 years of progressive engineering experience, with demonstrated contributions to full-cycle new product development (concept through production release).
Direct, hands-on experience designing and building electromechanical systems — not limited to design or analysis; candidates must have physically assembled and debugged hardware. Proficiency in Python for test scripting, data analysis, or automation; ability to read and interpret code written by others.
Working knowledge of electrical systems: ability to read schematics, interpret circuit-level behavior, and collaborate meaningfully with firmware and electrical engineers. Demonstrated experience designing and executing test plans for hardware/software integrated systems.
Ability to read and interpret detailed mechanical and electrical engineering drawings. Experience with SolidWorks or equivalent parametric CAD platform Preferred Experience with mass flow control systems, precision instrumentation, or fluid measurement and control.
Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, or C#. Experience developing automation systems or robotic assembly equipment. Background in process control, metrology, or calibration of precision instrumentation. Cleanroom environment experience.
Related Experience or Training Candidates with the following backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply: precision electromechanical product development; automated test system design; data acquisition and signal processing; pneumatic or fluid control systems; process control instrumentation, Physical Requirements and Work Environment This position requires the ability to kneel, reach, stand, walk, and lift objects up to 40 pounds.
