As Senior Medical Director, Digital Innovation at Aetna, a CVS Health company, you will serve as a key physician leader for Aetna’s digital health and clinical AI strategy — a role that sits at the forefront of how a leading national health plan is deploying artificial intelligence and digital tools to improve access, drive behavior change, and measurably improve outcomes for tens of millions of members.
Reporting directly to the Vice President, Chief Medical Officer, Commercial & Innovation, and partnering across Analytics, Technology, Clinical Operations, Enterprise AI, Product, and Aetna Medical Affairs, this leader will shape how Aetna sources, evaluates, and scales member-facing clinical AI products; how the Aetna Health app and omni-channel digital platforms are designed to activate members; and how AI is embedded into clinical workflows to extend the reach and impact of our care teams.
We are seeking a physician technologist: a clinician who is equally fluent in clinical product development, AI/ML applications, complex health care integrations, and population health strategy. The ideal candidate has built or led clinical digital products, understands what it takes to move from concept to scaled deployment, and brings the clinical credibility and executive presence to influence at every level of the organization.
Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities: Clinical AI — Member-Facing Tools Serve as the principal physician leader for Aetna’s member-facing clinical AI portfolio — tools and solutions that leverage artificial intelligence to improve access to care, close gaps in care, and drive measurable health outcomes across populations, with a focus on the Commercial line of business Work with Aetna Digital, Clinical Operations, Medical Affairs, and Product teams to develop and advance clinical AI product roadmap: source and evaluate emerging AI-enabled tools; scope clinical use cases and functional requirements; define and oversee measurement plans; and shepherd solutions from pilot through scaled deployment Establish clinical acceptability criteria for AI tools — covering clinical validity, safety, and workflow appropriateness — and ensure appropriate clinician-in-the-loop controls are in place where needed; establish criteria for AI vendor review in partnership with key business partners Define clinical performance measures — including effectiveness, safety signals, and unintended consequences — and establish monitoring plans for model drift, changes in clinical practice guidelines, and emerging risk signals; recommend retraining, recalibration, or retirement when appropriate Identify and mitigate risks from automation including bias, access inequities, and unintended harm; ensure equitable performance across member populations and align AI deployment with organizational values and member trust Member-Facing Omni-Channel Digital Campaigns Provide clinical leadership and strategic direction for member-facing omni-channel digital outreach campaigns designed to drive behavior change, close gaps in care, and improve health outcomes Partner with DDAT, Marketing, Care Management, and Commercial Medical Affairs colleagues to design, prioritize, and evaluate campaign strategies — applying population health thinking to segment members by risk, condition, and care gap, with clinical rigor in message design, targeting logic, and success measurement Serve as the physician partner to Aetna Digital on the Aetna Health app roadmap and feature development, advising on how digital tools — notifications, personalized content, coaching, self-service, and connected devices — can most effectively activate members to adopt health-promoting behaviors and navigate their care Champion a clinically grounded, evidence-informed approach to digital member engagement, partnering with product and design teams to integrate clinical intelligence into the member-facing experience AI Optimization for Clinical Workflows Partner with Clinical Operations colleagues to identify and prioritize opportunities to embed AI into clinical workflows — enabling care managers, nurses, and other clinical staff to work at the top of their license and extend their impact Provide physician leadership in the design and evaluation of AI-augmented workflows; ensure that automation and decision-support tools are clinically sound, operationally feasible, and appropriately governed; partner with operational leaders to ensure AI supports rather than disrupts care delivery Support clinician adoption through clear clinical guidance, training, and workflow integration; serve as a credible clinical voice in conversations with frontline staff and operational leaders Cross-Cutting Leadership Maintain active awareness of the rapidly evolving digital health, clinical AI, and health technology landscape; identify emerging opportunities and risks relevant to Aetna’s strategy Represent Commercial Medical Affairs in enterprise digital governance forums, technology steering committees, and cross-functional working groups Contribute clinical and strategic expertise to employer client engagement, RFP responses, and external thought leadership as relevant to digital health and clinical AI Operate as a credible, trusted partner to technical, product, and business colleagues — able to communicate clinical requirements to technical teams and translate technical tradeoffs back to clinical and business leaders Required Experience and Qualifications: MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) Active and current medical license (MD or DO) without encumbrances in at least one U.S. state Board Certification including Maintenance of Certification in a specialty of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Minimum 5 years of work experience in health care technology, digital health, managed care, or equivalent — with meaningful exposure to clinical product development or clinical AI Hands-on experience with AI/ML applications in health care — including generative AI, NLP, predictive modeling, or clinical decision support — and a nuanced understanding of the clinical, ethical, and regulatory considerations involved Exceptional ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders; demonstrated skill translating between clinical requirements and technology solutions Strong executive communication and stakeholder management skills; ability to build coalitions and drive alignment across diverse, matrixed audiences Ability to work virtually with occasional travel for in-person meetings (up to 15%) Preferred Experience and Qualifications: 10+ years of combined clinical and health technology, digital health, or managed care experience Demonstrated experience sourcing, evaluating, and/or implementing digital health or clinical AI solutions — including model review, validation, monitoring, and clinical workflow integration — in a health plan, health system, or health technology organization Familiarity with health plan operations, utilization management, care management, and commercial/employer line-of-business dynamics Prior experience contributing to AI governance, quality and safety frameworks, or responsible AI programs in a health care context Track record of thought leadership in digital health, clinical AI, or health technology — through publications, conference presentations, advisory roles, or industry engagement Education: MD or DO Pay Range The typical pay range for this role is: $184,112.00 - $396,550.00 This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.
