Within Aetna Technology (DDAT), this role will lead engineering delivery across internal teams in support of the Provider Portal. The Sr. Manager, Software Development Engineering is responsible for leading multiple agile engineering teams, driving end-to-end delivery of scalable, secure, and high-performing applications, and enabling modernization across the Aetna ecosystem.
This role combines deep technical leadership with strong delivery execution and cross-functional partnership. Lead and manage multiple engineering teams delivering enterprise-grade applications and services. Own end-to-end delivery across APIs, integrations, and backend systems supporting provider and claims workflows.
Partner with Product, Architecture, and Business stakeholders to define technology strategy and delivery roadmap. Ensure engineering excellence Oversee integration with internal and external (3rd party) platforms (e.g., Availity ecosystem).
Lead complex issue resolution, production stability, and continuous improvement initiatives. Develop and mentor engineering talent, building strong technical leadership bench strength. Required Qualifications 7+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering and enterprise application development, with a proven track record delivering large-scale distributed systems.
Proven ability to design and deliver enterprise-scale solutions integrating multiple backend systems, third-party platforms, and high-volume transaction processing environments. 7+ years of experience with technical leadership experience, including roles as Architect, Technical Lead, or Practice Head, with responsibilities spanning delivery ownership, mentoring, and solution governance. 5+ years of experience with API-led and integration-based architecture, including Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) implementations and modern API frameworks (e.g., REST, SOAP).2+ years of experience handling complex integration scenarios involving mainframe systems, APIs, and external partner ecosystems. 5+ years of experience with modern development practices including CI/CD pipelines, DevOps tooling (Azure DevOps, Jenkins), and automated testing frameworks. 5+ years of experience with cloud and hybrid architecture models, including application modernization and migration strategies. 5+ years of Agile delivery methodologies, with experience working in iterative, cross-functional team environments. 5+ years of experience partnering with business and technology stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions and drive end-to-end delivery. 3+ years of experience with integration and middleware platforms such as IBM ACE, IIB, WebSphere Message Broker, MuleSoft, and messaging technologies (MQ). 2+ years of domain experience in healthcare systems, including knowledge of EDI/X12 transactions (e.g., 834, 837), HIPAA standards, and payer/provider workflows.
Preferred Qualifications Healthcare payer + EDI experience Strong problem-solving capabilities with experience leading complex production troubleshooting, performance tuning, and system optimization initiatives. Integration modernization (ESB → APIs/microservices) Enterprise integration platforms (ACE/IIB/MuleSoft) Cloud / hybrid architecture exposure Experience establishing engineering standards / CoE Education Bachelor’s degree in computer science / engineering or equivalent work experience Post Grad / Certifications Preferred Pay Range The typical pay range for this role is: $130,295.00 - $260,590.00 This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.
The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.
