Overview Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects.

Responsibilities The successful candidate will support the design and delivery of telecommunications infrastructure for Microsoft's datacenter portfolio. Working closely with engineering partners, consultants, and senior technical SMEs, the role will contribute to telecommunications design reviews, project delivery activities, construction support, and continuous improvement initiatives.
The candidate will assist with telecommunications infrastructure design reviews, design documentation, standards implementation, and issue resolution associated with datacenter projects. Responsibilities include supporting physical telecommunications infrastructure and fiber optic cabling systems, including Inside Plant (ISP), Structured Cabling Systems (SCS) and Outside Plant (OSP) infrastructure.
The candidate will support development and review of Statements of Work (SOWs), design documents, bid packages, and options for physical telecommunications infrastructure and fiber optic cabling, including ISP/SCS and OSP infrastructure. Additionally, they may perform other duties as assigned.
Support the development and review of telecommunications designs from Basis of Design (BOD) through Issue for Construction (IFC). Support review of copper cabling, fiber optics, hyper-scale connectivity (including connectivity for CPU/GPU deployments), ISP, SCS, and OSP infrastructure designs.
Support construction administration activities and assist with resolution of design-related issues during project execution. Collaborate with engineering, construction, operations, suppliers, and consultant teams to support successful project delivery.
Assist with review of telecommunications design packages, specifications, schedules, and bill of materials. Participate in project meetings, site visits, field reviews, and cross-functional coordination activities. Support technical evaluations of fiber optic backbone systems, structured cabling infrastructure, and optical connectivity solutions.
Support telecommunications engineering activities associated with datacenter infrastructure projects. Participate in fiber architecture evaluations, testing methodologies, commissioning activities, and troubleshooting efforts. Collaborate with senior engineers and SMEs to develop technical expertise in telecommunications systems, copper and fiber infrastructure, and datacenter deployment practices.
Support development and maintenance of telecommunications standards, engineering guidance, and best practices. Support engineering reviews, standards implementation, and design quality initiatives across the datacenter portfolio. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
Other Qualifications: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
- related field OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
- related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
- related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience. 3-5+ years of telecommunications, fiber optic infrastructure, structured cabling
- datacenter engineering experience.
- Experience with optical communications, photonics, fiber optic systems, telecommunications infrastructure, structured cabling systems, or mission-critical environments.
- Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn and apply complex technical concepts across telecommunications, fiber optic infrastructure, and datacenter engineering environments.
- BICSI RCDD or DCDC certified.
- Knowledge of industry standards, building codes, and safety standards including BICSI Standards, TDMM, RUS Standards, ANSI/IEEE/IEC, NFPA, NEC, and applicable building codes.
- Familiarity with fiber and copper testing methodologies, optical connectivity, and structured cabling systems.
- Experience supporting mission-critical or complex infrastructure projects.
- Demonstrated technical curiosity and desire to develop deep fiber expertise.

- There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area
- the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $133,800 - $219,200 per year.
